The first ten-game LLM arena comparison

Study log/llm-arena documents the completed arena series baseten-series-2026-09-17. The report introduces the TypeScript tool loop, seated information boundary, search, memory, and Parquet recordings. The new competition exhibit preserves all ten round IDs, exact model identities, seat assignments, opening and regular turn orders, final outcomes, and replay hashes.

DeepSeek V4 Pro won five games, Kimi K3 three, GLM 5.3 two, and Inkling none. All ten reached a recorded winner; no game was excluded or replaced. There were tool errors, provider failures, compaction fallbacks, and engine timeouts within completed games. Inkling's action-format failures and DeepSeek's higher timeout count limit an interpretation based solely on strategy.

The lineup, schedule, settings and runtime were frozen before play. This study files an exploratory comparison retrospectively, not a preregistered causal hypothesis. The standalone learned-search baseline remains unchanged. No new inference was run to publish this report.

Attribution: Codex implementation and audit, with gpt-5.6-luna reviewing transcripts. The player IDs are recorded separately and exactly in the exhibit.

Expert baseline follow-up

The original comparison has been retired from the public report. Its ten full recordings, original report and metadata were archived without changing their hashes. The original arena journals and frozen runtime remain available locally. Inkling’s malformed tool calls and poor trade decisions made it an unsuitable member of a strength comparison. Its rounds are not pooled with the new study.

Study log/llm-expert-competition owns the replacement report. The registered protocol freezes ten distinct boards, the three LLMs, the Expert baseline, a two-minute turn ceiling and the complete token/search settings before paid inference. The source runtime and schedule digests are in the registration. The hypothesis is that at least one LLM wins more games than Expert; equality does not support it. This small comparison is descriptive, with uncertainty reported.

Before registration, an Expert smoke exposed unnecessary worker termination between completed decisions. Preserving idle workers retains their loaded tables; the short real game now completes. All 30 arena tests and checkpoint verification passed before launch. No smoke results enter the ten-game total. Published replays omit repeated input prompts, images and opaque provider payloads while retaining every move, reasoning response, scratchpad revision and timeline event. Full source archives remain local.

Attribution: Codex implementation and analysis. No transcript subagent was used for this follow-up. The batch is still running; final interpretation follows after every scheduled game has been audited.

Restart with spatial text inputs

The user explicitly stopped the first Expert-baseline attempt while two games were running. They ended at turns 37 and 31, with no winner. Eight scheduled games never started. The interruption record retains the original protocol and hash-verified local archive; those games are excluded from the replacement denominator because the input protocol changed, not because of who was leading.

The replacement protocol freezes ten new boards and the same models, seating balance and budgets. Every LLM receives labelled text, a stable ASCII hex map, named resource counts and contextual action rankings. Tool receipts, scratchpad contents and compaction transcripts are text. Typed JSON remains at the provider transport and outgoing tool-call boundaries. Images remain available for Kimi and GLM. Thirty-three arena tests and all eight vendored-file/checkpoint checks passed before the new runtime was frozen.
